Microneedling Q & A
What is microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that rejuvenates the appearance of your skin by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. Both proteins are vital for your skin: Collagen supports and strengthens your skin while elastin makes it resilient.
How does microneedling improve your appearance?
Your skin constantly renews itself. But over time, your skin produces less collagen and elastin. Even though you continue to replace old skin, your new skin gradually becomes loose, its texture changes, and wrinkles develop.
Microneedling boosts the amount of collagen and elastin your body produces, which means that new skin growth regains its youthful strength, elasticity, and tightness.
Which skin problems are treated with microneedling?
Your provider at Hill Country Dermatology can perform microneedling on your face, neck, and other parts of your body, such as your arms, legs, hands, and abdomen. The team uses the procedure to diminish the appearance of:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Brown spots and other skin discolorations
- Large pores
- Scars, including acne scars
- Uneven skin tone
- Loose skin
Microneedling can also help with stretch marks in certain areas of the body and creates a fresher appearance and glow to the skin.
How does microneedling work?
Before your treatment, your provider applies a topical anesthetic. The team at Hill Country Dermatology uses very tiny sterile needles which can safely and precisely create controlled micro-injuries in your skin. These micro punctures trigger your body’s healing response, during which your body's collagen and elastin production increases. The microneedling procedure takes about 30 minutes, depending on the treatment areas you're targeting.
After the procedure, the treated area will be slightly red, like a mild sunburn, for a few days. But luckily, microneedling doesn't require any downtime, so you can return to most of your usual activities. You should follow your provider's aftercare guidelines, which usually involve staying out of the sun and avoiding skin care products with active ingredients like retinol until you heal.
When will I see results from microneedling?
It takes time for new collagen to grow, so you’ll gradually see results over the next few months. You may need more than one treatment spaced about four to six weeks apart, depending on the type of problem that your provider is treating and your desired results.
When you’re ready to fight the effects of aging and restore your skin, call Hill Country Dermatology or book an appointment online today.
